Need help finding your correct tyre size?

Mounting tyres of the right size is crucial to your vehicle’s safety and performance. Different car makes and models require varying tyre sizes. Experimenting with the wrong size can affect tyre longevity, wear, and your car’s safety. That’s why we at PSM Tyres and Repair Centre always recommend our customers refer to the car manufacturer’s manual when they buy car tyres Brighouse.

You might also know that tyre size information is available on the sidewall of your vehicle’s tyre. However, many of our patrons do not clearly understand what the alphanumeric code on the sidewall signifies. If you are uncertain about its meaning, read along!

Understanding Tyre Sizes

The format for tyre size is similar in all modern tyres. For example, a performance car tyre may read: 235/40 R18 95 V. Each of these numbers and letters – 235, 40, R, 18, 95, V – signify a particular tyre feature that complements the vehicle’s overall performance.

Width

The first three digits denote the width of the tyre in millimetres. In the above example, the tyre’s width is 235 mm. Different cars require tyres of varying widths, for instance, 175 mm or 225 mm.

Aspect Ratio

The next two digits – 40 in the example – represent the height of the tyre from the tread’s base to the rim, shown as a percentage of the tread width. In this case, the tyre’s height is 40% of 235 mm.

Construction Type

This letter denotes the construction type of your car tyres Brighouse. Most tyres today carry the letter R, which signifies radial tyres with radial ply construction. Other types include D for diagonal and B for belted tyres.

Rim Diameter

The following two digits in the tyre size format represent the wheel rim’s diameter. When buying wheels for existing tyres, this measurement must be followed precisely.

Load Index

The next two-digit number (or sometimes three digits) shows the load index or load rating, which denotes the maximum weight a single tyre can carry when properly inflated. For example, a tyre with load index 88 can carry up to 600 kg.

Speed Rating

The alphabet at the end signifies the speed rating, i.e., the maximum speed at which the tyre can operate safely when inflated and fitted correctly. The highest speed rating is Y, representing 186 mph.
